Day two in Croatia, have settled into my apartment/villa – 2km out of a quiet coastal town -Fazana and across the road from a small paintball field!
Managed to bus into the main town Pula and acquire a microsim card (all kiosks only have standard sim cards) incl 300 min local calls and 1gb of mobile data for 65 kuna (about $12nz) which is great as I can now communicate with the outside world again using viber and whatsapp on the iPhone. The only downside is tethering/personal hotspot seems to be disabled meaning I’m stuck posting this from my iPhone rather than my MacBook.
Spent the rest of the day drinking beer and eating pizza with the local paintball club guys and have arranged to stay at theirs next week and travel up country to play for one of their local teams in a 3 man race2 format tournament .
Later headed into dimensions to catch up with Daria and the uk crew, sunk a few beers and listened to some tunes during the pre party. On the way back had unlicensed cab drivers try to sell me a 45kn trip for 100kn, good thing I knew the going rate and had a local driver to use (Fazana taxis).
This morning cruised into town and got on a boat to Brijuni national park, an island that used to be the summer home of former Yugoslavian leader Marshall Tito. Checked out the wildlife park, roman ruins, lots of references to a German doctor who got rid of malaria (I sense my guide was struggling with her English) then into the museum, where we didn’t get to see his caddy, but we did get to see the stuffed animal collection (which died of natural causes, ie animals not acclimating to the Croatian weather when imported from overseas), which was as good as – well a stuffed animal question in a former socialist country could be I guess, and a rather large amount of “non aligned” countries (think India, Egypt, Cuba etc in the 70s/cold war period) pr photos.
Back on the boat and prepping for day one of dimensions festival tonight. First up – audio doughnuts stage in the courtyard.
More photos will be added and formatting fixed once I can get the MacBook near the Internet.
